DA councillor among four suspects arrested for alleged murder

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has called on the Democratic Alliance (DA) to suspend its councillor Kabelo Mahonko, who was arrested in connection with the alleged kidnapping, assault and murder of a man accused of breaking into a house.

Mahonko, a councillor in the City of Ekurhuleni, was arrested on 17 August and appeared before the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on 19 August. He faces charges of kidnapping and murder.

DA COUNCILLOR ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED MURDER

The DA has reportedly referred the matter to its Federal Legal Commission.

Reacting to the arrest, the EFF called on the DA to immediately suspend Mahonko from all public responsibilities pending the finalisation of the legal process.

“As a DA PR councillor in the City of Ekurhuleni, this matter cannot be reduced to internal party processes concerning an ordinary member. We also call on the Ekurhuleni City Council to suspend Mahonko from any municipal work,” the party said.

According to Gauteng police, Mahonko allegedly tortured and assaulted two men, aged 33 and 36, after accusing them of breaking into her house and stealing items.

Unfortunately, one of the men later died from his injuries.

ACCUSED SET TO APPEAR IN COURT

Three more suspects have been arrested in connection with the matter. They appeared in court on 21 August and are expected to appear alongside DA councillor Kabelo Mahonko on 27 August for a bail application.
