Dolly Parton passed away on August 25, 2026, and the rap star didn’t just mourn a country music icon; he mourned the connection they never got to fully explore.
Back in 2022, when both artists were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the same class at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, Dolly sent Eminem a handwritten note that would stay with him for years.
The letter arrived after his induction ceremony performance, during which he tore through “Rap God,” “Stan,” and other classics, with Steven Tyler and Ed Sheeran joining him on stage.
Dolly’s words weren’t about rap credentials or chart positions. She wrote about feeling an unexplained connection to him, something spiritual that transcended their different musical worlds.
“Even though I don’t know a lot about rap music, I’ve come to know that you are the very best at it,” she told him in the letter.
What hit Eminem hardest was her honesty about missing him at the ceremony. Dolly admitted she’d hoped to meet him that night, but the chaos of the event got in the way.
She hated those kinds of situations anyway, she said, and the moment slipped away. That regret became his regret too.
When Eminem shared the note publicly after her death, his words carried the weight of someone who understood what he’d lost.
“I’m sorry we never got a chance to meet, but getting this note from Dolly really had an impact on me,” he wrote. “She definitely didn’t have to take the time to do it. Even for a kid who mostly listened to rap music, she was an icon. A superstar in every sense. Rest easy Dolly. And thank you for the kind words.”
Dolly’s final message to him was about legacy and impact. She encouraged him to keep creating, telling him that his work touched people in ways he’d never fully understand.
“In the meantime, keep doing what you’re doing because you do it so well and no matter how complex your world may be just know you are very special and touch people in ways you don’t even know,” she wrote.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame moment that brought them together as inductees became the only real connection they’d ever have.

Congratulations on your induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Your performance was amazing and everybody said so. Even though I don’t know a lot about rap music, I’ve come to know that you are the very best at it. Aside from that I hope what I have to say will not seem weird or strange to you but I have always felt some unexplained connection to you like I know you somehow. I had hoped to meet you at the show but you know how nuts those things are, personally I hate ’em and I missed my chance but maybe someday we’ll meet. In the meantime, keep doing what you’re doing because you do it so well and no matter how complex your world may be just know you are very special and touch people in ways you don’t even know.
