‘F**k The Police’: Hattieville man sentenced to three years for busting several shots at police officer with illegal gun

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 24-year-old Hattieville man who probably listen to too much NWA was sentenced to three years in prison on Friday after admitting that he fired several shots at a police officer who approached him while he was carrying a firearm in public.

Blake Norman Lewis appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he changed his previous not-guilty pleas to guilty for keeping an unlicensed firearm, aggravated assault upon a police officer and discharging a firearm in public.

The charges arose from an incident on February 8, 2026, when a cop reportedly saw Lewis walking along a Hattieville street carrying what appeared to be a firearm.

Rivero told investigators that he contacted the Hattieville Police Station for backup but received no response. When he approached Lewis and identified himself as a police officer, Lewis allegedly raised the weapon and opened fire.

The officer took cover and returned fire, while Lewis reportedly continued shooting before fleeing and leaving behind a silver pistol with an empty magazine. Ten expended shells were recovered from the scene.

Police later detained Lewis in the Sibun area with gunshot injuries to his foot and back. He was discharged from the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital on February 10 and handed over to the Queen Street Police Station.

Lewis had been on remand for approximately five months before changing his pleas. He was initially sentenced to four and a half years for the firearm offence, but deductions were made for his guilty plea, expressions of remorse, mitigation and time already spent on remand, leaving him with two years to serve on that charge.

He received an additional one-year sentence for aggravated assault, which will run consecutively. Another one-year sentence for discharging a firearm in public will run concurrently, bringing his total prison term to three years.

In mitigation, Lewis told the court, “I am sorry for what I did. I will never do it again.” He said he had remained positive while incarcerated and had participated in the ARC Programme, Journey to Freedom and other rehabilitation programmes.

Lewis’s uncle also spoke on his behalf, describing him as a calm individual, his mother’s “right hand” and a loving father who frequently spoke about his children. He asked the court for leniency and suggested that Lewis be allowed to pay a fine.

Senior Magistrate Dennison told Lewis that, at 24, he still had his entire life ahead of him and an opportunity to change. However, she said the court had to send a strong message that firing at police officers could not be tolerated.
