iFani Opens Call For Eastern Cape Rappers Ahead Of EC vs KZN Cypher. Eastern Cape hip-hop is being called to the frontlines as iFani and KwaZulu-Natal rap heavyweight Zakwe prepare to bring two of South Africa’s strongest regional hip-hop cultures face to face in an upcoming EC vs KZN cypher.
iFani has opened the search for rappers who are ready to represent the Eastern Cape in the bars-driven showdown. The cypher is being hosted alongside Zakwe, the influential force behind the long-running KZN Lockdown Cypher series.
Taking to Instagram, iFani issued a straightforward call to action, asking fans and fellow artists to nominate rappers who deserve a place on the Eastern Cape team.
“ATTENTION: Rappers needed for a Cypher. There’s a EC vs. KZN Cypher going down… I need 
to represent EC. Please give me names. If nguwe, please raise your hand in the comments section,” he wrote.
Three names have already emerged as early selections, with Nomalanga, Lxndi and Isaac Wlsn currently on iFani’s list. Lxndi, whose real name is Landile Nkengana and who is also known as Ta Landz, has been building a reputation as one of Gqeberha’s emerging voices, bringing storytelling and Xhosa lyricism into the spotlight. Isaac Wlsn, meanwhile, has established himself as a recording artist and producer connected to the Port Elizabeth scene, combining his production skills with his work as a rapper.
With iFani targeting a 15-member Eastern Cape line-up, another 12 spots remain up for grabs.
The upcoming cypher brings together two provinces with deep and distinctive hip-hop identities. KZN has continued to nurture its rap culture through platforms such as Zakwe’s Lockdown Cypher, which has provided opportunities for emerging artists to showcase their lyrical ability. On the other side, the Eastern Cape has produced a long list of influential voices, with iFani himself remaining one of the province’s most recognisable hip-hop figures.
For iFani, the call also puts renewed attention on the wealth of talent coming out of the Eastern Cape and the importance of giving local rappers a platform to showcase their pen game.
This is shaping up to be less about commercial appeal and more about what happens when rappers step to the mic with nothing but their lyrics, confidence and provincial pride. The Eastern Cape will have to assemble a squad capable of matching whatever KZN brings to the cypher.
For now, iFani is leaving the door open. Artists who believe they have what it takes have been encouraged to put their names forward in the comments.
The teams are taking shape, the provincial rivalry is heating up, and when the microphones are finally switched on, the bars will do the talking.
