International News: Country music legend Dolly Parton dies

By Zoila Palma:  Dolly Parton, the beloved country music icon whose powerful voice, songwriting and unmistakable personality made her a global superstar, has died at the age of 80.

Parton died peacefully today in Nashville, Tennessee, according to her publicist.

Rising from humble beginnings in rural Tennessee, she became one of the most successful entertainers of her generation, with a career spanning music, film, television, business and philanthropy.

Parton was celebrated for timeless hits including “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You,” while her career also included numerous Grammy Awards, induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the creation of Dollywood.

She sold more than 100 million records worldwide and became known not only for her music, but also for her charitable work, including the Dolly Parton Imagination Library literacy programme.

In the months before her death, Parton had faced health challenges that forced her to cancel or postpone several performances and appearances.

Parton’s death marks the end of an extraordinary career that saw her transcend country music to become a cultural icon whose appeal crossed generations and political divides.
