By Zoila Palma: Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner participated in a roundtable discussion on Friday, September 4, during the Mayors Forum in Barranquilla, Colombia, where city leaders explored strategies for transforming urban communities and improving the quality of life for residents.
The discussions emphasized that successful cities require more than infrastructure, with strong institutions, public trust, employment opportunities, transparent governance, safer communities and resilient systems identified as key drivers of sustainable development.
For Belize City, Wagner said the discussions reinforce the City Council’s commitment to turning visible improvements into lasting progress. Priorities include strengthening the city’s project pipeline, supporting small businesses and young people, revitalizing the downtown area and unlocking the potential of the waterfront.
Wagner said the lessons and partnerships emerging from the forum will help guide continued efforts to build a more resilient, dynamic and people-centered Belize City.
