A South African farmer living in the US has been handed down a 12-year sentence following a child pornography conviction. Marcell Meyer, of KwaZulu-Natal, will now be registered on the child sex offenders list
SA FARMER CONVICTED FOR CHILD PORN CHARGES
On Wednesday, 26 August, South African farmer Marcell received a 12-year sentence in a federal prison for distributing and possessing child sexual-abuse material.
The 45-year-old pled guilty to the charges in May, avoiding the risks of trial and a potentially harsher sentence.
Meyer admitted to using social media to distribute sexual-abuse material, including to an undercover investigator he believed was a 13-year-old girl.
Prosecutors described his actions as “despicable”.

The South African man, who worked on his family’s Dalton sugarcane farm in KwaZulu-Natal, moved to the US in late 2022, where he got a job at as a dairy farmer in the Jefferson County, New York.
In March 2025, he was arrested following a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) investigation.
SOUTH AFRICAN ARRESTS AND CONVICTIONS
Marcell Meyer is not the only South African who has been arrested and sentenced in the US.
Last November, Vasudevan Pillay was arrested on charges of passport fraud and aggravated identity theft. He was accused of assuming the identity of a US citizen who died as a toddler.

In July, Portia Anyamba was sentenced in Tennessee after pleading guilty to acting as an undeclared foreign agent and making false statements on a security-clearance application.
In March, Mel and Peet Viljoen were arrested on charges of aggravated grand retail theft. They have both since been deported.
