The Government of Saint Lucia has signed an EC$54 million agreement to expand affordable housing. The government-guaranteed deal is between the Saint Lucia Development Bank (SLDB) and Taiwan Eximbank.
The funding will help create housing for middle- and low-income families. On Monday, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre said that public servants will also benefit from the initiative.
The agreement also focuses on making infrastructure more climate-resilient by improving drainage, adding water storage solutions and installing solar photovoltaic systems.
During the official announcement on Tuesday, August 25, Pierre explained who the financing is meant to help:
“We must try to get the underserved to be served. We must try to ensure that people who did not have the opportunity ever to be funded get the opportunity to be funded. We have to ensure that our staff are treated properly. We have to ensure that we have a situation where everyone, everyone, wins and our country benefits.”
