Salvation Army Helps Over 300 NYC Children Prepare For School Year

On Friday, The Salvation Army’s Harlem Community Center brought families together for its annual Back-to-School Drive, distributing more than 300 backpacks filled with essential school supplies to local children The event offered families more than just the supplies they need for the classroom. Children enjoyed an afternoon of face painting, a bubble machine, games, food and other activities designed to make back-to-school season feel exciting and positive. For families already navigating rising living costs and uncertainty around benefits such as SNAP, back-to-school expenses can become difficult to prioritize alongside groceries, housing and other household necessities. By providing backpacks and school supplies at no cost, The Salvation Army is helping families save money while ensuring children have what they need to start the school year feeling prepared and confident. “Anytime we can help our local families and communities not only save a dollar here and there, but really provide the support that our local families need, we feel extremely blessed,” said Major Neek, leader of The Salvation Army’s Harlem Community Center. The event also drew support from the local community, including influencer Natasha Parker, who joined The Salvation Army to help give back to local families. “It’s really amazing to be here with The Salvation Army to give back to the community,” Parker said. “It’s back-to-school season, and it’s a stressful time for some parents. We want to help out where we can. It is such a blessing to be able to give back to the community.” The event provides a timely look at the challenges families face heading into the new school year, as well as the impact that community support can have in helping ease some of those pressures.
