A South Asian from Canada is in custody in connection to the hit-and-run death of ‘Turbaned Tornado’ Fauja Singh, 114, on Monday in Punjab’s Jalandhar district.

Amritpal Singh Dhillon, 26, a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) who had arrived in India three weeks ago from Canada, was arrested by a Jalandhar Rural Police team on Tuesday evening after a massive hunt for almost 30 hours led investigators to his house at Dasupur village of Kartarpur sub-division where they seized the SUV that was involved in the hit-and-run.

According to The Tribune newspaper of Punjab, Dhillon told police that he arrived in India on June 23 on an emergency certificate after he lost his Indian passport in Canada. He went to Canada on a tourist visa but managed to get a work permit there.

Dhillon’s family, including his mother and three sisters, are in Canada. He had lost his father some time ago. Since his return to Punjab, he had been getting his house repaired. He owns about 12 acres of agricultural land, the newspaper reported. He has no criminal background.

Police said that Dhillon used every tactic to evade them. After hitting Fauja Singh with his SUV, he used country lanes to reach his house; so police were not able to get much CCTV footage. But whatever footage they were able to retrieve “were conclusive,” a senior police officer told the media.

Following the hit-and-run, Dhillon hid the SUV in his garage and kept it covered. He used a bike “and was casually going around,” police said.

“The broken parts of the SUV that had fallen at the accident site helped us identify the vehicle. We had to struggle to trace Dhillon, as he was not the first buyer of the SUV. We took the broken parts to a Toyota agency to figure out the model of the vehicle, which was found to be from 2009. It was finally in the insurance records of this Fortuner that the phone number of Dhillon was found. We used the record of the phone number to trace him. Once we reached his house, he confessed to the crime,” police told the media, according to The Tribune.
