By Zoila Palma: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is calling on the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) and the Government of Belize to immediately reverse the latest increase in electricity rates, arguing that consumers are already struggling with the rising cost of basic necessities.
The PUC has approved a 1.5-cent-per-kilowatt-hour Cost of Power Adjustment for August, the first adjustment under a new regulatory framework.
The UDP issued a statement saying that the additional electricity cost comes at a difficult time for households across the country.
“The cost of living is already crippling Belizean families. Food, rent, transportation and other basic necessities continue to consume more of household incomes, and Belizeans simply cannot afford another increase in the cost of electricity,” the UDP said.
The UDP also raised concerns about the frequency of electricity rate increases, claiming that Belizeans saw an increase in January and are now facing another adjustment before the year is halfway over. “More troubling is that this is the second electricity rate increase in just seven months,” the UDP said.
The UDP also questioned whether consumers are seeing sufficient benefits from those investments while electricity costs continue to rise.
“Where is the benefit to the consumer?” the UDP asked.
The UDP is further calling for the latest increase to be rolled back, an explanation of how nearly $400 million in investments have benefited consumers, and action to address complaints about sharply increased bills.
