All four or none: social partners set terms for Cabinet’s Speednet meeting

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Cabinet invited two organizations to explain their rejection of BTL’s proposed Speednet acquisition. It got an answer from four, speaking as one.

Government had asked the National Trade Union Congress of Belize and the Chamber of Commerce to appear before Cabinet on Thursday. Instead, a joint response came from the full social partner bloc: the Belize Network of NGOs, the National Evangelical Association of Belize, the Chamber and the NTUCB.

“Any consideration for a meeting must include representation from all four social partner groups in keeping with our collective action on this matter,” the partners stated, adding that requests for financial statements and independent valuation reports “remain pending.” They asked for reasonable time to review the information once shared, to inform effective participation in discussions with Cabinet.

The partners also called on the Public Utilities Commission to fulfill the requests made in its own August 6 statement.

The message to Cabinet is unmistakable: the coalition will not be split, and the documents come before the dialogue.
