Five more suspects arrested over rugby player’s mob killing

Police is holding  five more suspects implicated in the mob killing of Sydney Gongodyo, a professional rugby player, bringing the total number of people in custody to eight.

The arrests follow an incident that occurred on June 5, 2026, in Nakawa division, Kampala, where the victim was allegedly attacked by a group of boda boda riders and members of the public on suspicion of theft.

The suspects in custody have been identified as Ssebagala Noordin, Ayebazibwe Roden, Namukose Juliet, Mondoni Elly, Twinomujuni Herbert, Katsigazi Perigrino, Tayebwa Darlious and Tugume Hannington. Police say efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals believed to have participated in the attack.

According to police, the deceased, Sidney Gongondyo, 27, a resident of Busibanti zone in Najjera, Wakiso district, was severely assaulted during the incident.

Officers who responded to the scene found him critically injured but still alive and rushed him to Mulago National Referral hospital for treatment. He later succumbed to his injuries.

A team from Kampala Metropolitan Police East (KMP East) visited and documented the scene as part of ongoing investigations.

Police have condemned the act of mob justice, describing it as unlawful and a threat to the rule of law.

“The Uganda Police Force strongly condemns all acts of mob justice. Such actions undermine the rule of law and often result in the loss of innocent lives,” police said in a statement.

Authorities have urged the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, advising that suspects should instead be handed over to the nearest police station without being subjected to violence.

Police also warned that participation in mob action is a serious criminal offence that can attract charges, including murder.

“We caution members of the public against joining lynch mobs, as some individuals exploit such situations to settle personal grievances or target innocent persons,” the statement added.

Statistics from police indicate that mob justice remains a significant concern. In 2025 alone, 950 cases of murder by mob action were registered out of 4,238 homicide cases, representing 22.4 per cent of all reported homicides.

Police say investigations into the killing of Gongodyo are ongoing, and those found culpable will be brought to justice.
