Leader of Opposition calls for child-birth deliveries to be covered under NHI

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Today, Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton called for child-birth deliveries to be covered under NHI.

“I am personally invested in keeping a close eye on the rollout of National Health Insurance (NHI). This year, the Government of Belize has allocated $75 million for the nationwide expansion of primary healthcare services, with a significant portion of those funds being directed to private healthcare providers.

During yesterday’s Budget Debate in the National Assembly, the Minister of Health was only able to identify 7 public healthcare facilities participating in the new NHI scheme,” Panton said.

Panton further explained.

“Today, a young mother who delivers her baby at KHMH is required to pay approximately $575 for a normal delivery. If she cannot immediately pay 50% of that bill, or alternatively make a 25% down payment and enter into a payment arrangement, she may be unable to access the documentation needed to register her newborn child. A child’s proof of birth is not a luxury. It is a basic right.

So, as we spend $75 million on healthcare reform, should normal deliveries be covered under NHI,” Panton said.

Panton urged everyone to “stay the course to ensure better health outcomes and better healthcare services for all Belizeans.”
