By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): An audit has been completed at Louisiana Government School after reports that roughly $100,000 went missing over several years.
Minister of Education Francis Fonseca confirmed the audit is done, and that the next step is meetings with the principal, the bursar and others working in finance at the school.
Whether those meetings have happened, he could not say.
“I haven’t gotten any feedback if they’ve had the meeting yet,” Fonseca said.
He was clear on what should follow if the audit found what it was looking for.
“If there are any misappropriation that took place, they would make sure that those who were involved would be held responsible.”
Government schools operate on tight budgets, funded by taxpayers and supplemented by fees and fundraising that parents contribute to. A sum of that size, missing across multiple years, is money that did not reach classrooms, supplies or students.
Nothing has been made public from the audit itself and nobody has been named.
