21 killed in Klein Karoo N1 crash

Twenty-one people have died in a three-vehicle crash on South Africa’s N1 in the Klein Karoo, according to Western Cape traffic authorities.

SABC News reported on 14 September 2026 that the collision happened on Sunday night between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka and involved two minibus taxis and a car. Three other people were seriously injured.

Western Cape Mobility Department spokesperson Muneera Allie said emergency and traffic teams remained at the scene while the N1 was closed in both directions. Motorists were urged to avoid the area where possible, expect major delays and follow instructions from officials.

Authorities advised road users that the available alternative route runs via Prince Albert Road Station, the R407 and then the N12 towards Beaufort West, adding roughly 200 kilometres to the journey.

The crash is among the deadliest road incidents reported in South Africa in recent months and has again drawn attention to safety on major long-distance routes used by private vehicles and passenger transport operators.
