The legendary comedian, actor, and MTV icon Bill Bellamy caught up with Love and R&B host KG Smooth to talk about his latest run, his legacy, and the moments that shaped him.
On Tour, On Point, and Keeping It Real
Bellamy is currently rolling through his Top Billing 2026 tour, with stops at the Arlington Improv from August 28th through the 30th. He’s using the road to sharpen material for his next comedy special, and this new hour hits close to home.
“I’ve been writing a whole new hour that I think is relevant, it is real, and it is hilarious,” Bellamy said. Much of it centers on aging, health, and the funny truths of getting older. As he joked, dating in your youth meant asking for a phone number. Now? “You gotta ask a chick what medicine you on.”
The comedian will soon be honored with the Icon Award at the What’s Funny Comedy Festival in Chicago. For Bellamy, the recognition means everything.
“I’ve always wanted to be a trailblazer, an example of Black elegance and excellence,” he shared. “You never know when you’re gonna get your flowers, and I’m just happy to be alive to receive them.”
MTV Memories, Musical Roots, and What’s Next
Reflecting on his MTV Jams days, Bellamy remembered interviewing Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Tupac, Whitney Houston, and TLC. He spoke fondly of his playful chemistry with Janet, admitting there was “a very friendly, flirtatious energy,” though he never crossed the line.
Still tapped into the culture, Bellamy shouted out current favorites like Kalani, Raheem DeVaughn, Leon Thomas, Daniel Caesar, and Lucky Daye.
Before hanging up, he dropped news of his new film, The Stepson, hitting theaters this Christmas. “Keep winning,” KG Smooth told him. Clearly, Bellamy already is.
