Chevrier upgrades to silver in CAC Games sailing

Saint Lucia got onto the medals table at the XXV Central American & Caribbean Games on Friday in the Dominican Republic through Luc Chevrier in the sport of men’s sailing. The 27-year-old took silver in the ILCA 7 men’s Laser Radial event.

Competing at Punta Salinas, the two-time Olympian upgraded from the bronze medal he won in 2023. But he would still have room for disappointment, having been in the perfect position to aim for gold after the opening race of the final fleet. 

Strong, steady 20-knot winds provided good conditions for the one-man dinghies. The 18-man fleet had been shorn to five, with fast courses for the last two decisive runs. 

Chevrier threw a big opening punch, winning the first race. It was his sixth win in 11 races over seven days, putting him on 19 net points, one back of the leader, Pedro Luis Fernandez Gamboa of Puerto Rico, who was second in the penultimate race. The Saint Lucian champion needed to finish ahead of the Puerto Rican to take gold.

Gamboa remained steadfast in the final event, taking second again and going to 20 net points. Chevrier, however, finished third, ending on 22 net points. Sebastian Kempe of Bermuda took the final race and the bronze medal with 25 net points.

With the silver medal, Chevrier has earned a spot in the 2027 Pan Am Games regatta in Lima, Peru, where he will hope to secure a place at the 2028 Olympics.
