Councillor Jag Gill will be Mission’s new mayor

JAG Gill, who has been serving on City Council since 2018, will be the new mayor of Mission.

He was declared elected by acclamation on Friday.

Gill was elected as the youngest Councillor in Mission in 2018. In the past two municipal elections, he garnered the most votes among Council candidates.

Born and raised in Mission, Gill attended Cherry Hill Elementary, graduated from Mission Secondary, and then studied Business and Communications at the University of the Fraser Valley.

Gill opened his first business in high school, Mission City Pizza, which has become more successful than he ever dreamed of due to the support received from Mission residents.

He has been an active community member and volunteer, and has a wealth of board experience, and is a Rotary member.  In his spare time, he enjoys long hikes with his puppy Kobe and reading a good book.

When he officially announced his campaign for mayor, he said in a video message posted on social media: “For the past several years I have had the privilege of serving this community on Council. I’ve listened, I’ve learned and through it all one thing has become very clear to me. Mission is a community that people care deeply about. This city has given me a lot. It has shaped who I am and after many conversations with residents, friends, local business owners, families across this community and most importantly my own family, I am officially announcing my campaign for the mayor of the City of Mission.

“People want a city that works, safe streets, responsible decisions, a livable community, growth that makes sense and is tied to infrastructure, support for local businesses, and a council that is transparent, and stays focused on the issues that people deal with every single day, I’ve always believed that leadership starts with listening, being accessible, doing the work, leading by example, and making decisions based on what’s best for the community, not politics.”

“Mission is growing and the decisions we make over the next few years will shape the city for generations to come. I am ready for that responsibility and truthfully I want that responsibility because I care deeply about this community and I believe that strong, transparent and focused leadership matters right now more than ever and I would be truly honoured to earn your support for mayor.”
