Live Music / Southeast Asia / Taiwan / Hengchun
Mark your calendars: Pingtung County’s Hear Here World Music Festival returns October 9-10 to the West Gate Square of Hengchun Historical City — a walled 19th-century town near Kenting National Park, at the very southern tip of Taiwan where the Taiwan Strait, the Bashi Channel, and the Pacific Ocean all meet.
And yes, it’s completely free to attend.
Why Hengchun, and Why Now?
Hengchun isn’t just scenic, it’s the birthplace of Taiwan’s yueqin (moon lute) tradition and a living archive of southern Taiwanese folk song. What started in 2018 as a single-day event has grown into the month-long Hengchun Peninsula Folk Month, now encompassing the Hengchun Peninsula National Folk Song Competition, the Folk Song Forum, and the Hear Here World Music Festival — the biggest draw of the month, and the one pulling in performers from around the world.

This year’s theme #DanceYourFolkOut, says it all: expect the yueqin front and center, but reimagined through basslines, brass, and beats that will have you moving whether you understand the lyrics or not.
The Lineup: Eight Countries, One Stage
Performers are converging from Canada, Chad, France, India, Israel, Japan, the Philippines, and Taiwan, sharing the bill with local folk masters, associations, and school ensembles. Here’s what’s on the bill:

Highlight Show
Taiwanese crossover act Spectro 7 headlines, fusing world music with Hengchun folk traditions. Golden Melody Award winner Sauljaljui joins as folk-music consultant and performer, backed by student artists, local bands, and two international acts: SHIRAN & BAKAL (Israel) and Hindustani Dance Theatre (India).
Global Music Gala
A genre-hopping relay across five continents:
– Guhit Band (Philippines) tropical reggae
– DaBangNi, led by Liu Jung-chang (Taiwan) Hakka rock
– SHIRAN & BAKAL (Israel) electro hafla
– Suming (Taiwan, Golden Melody Award winner) Amis electronic music
– Te Natira’a, Tahitian dance and music
– AfrotroniX (Chad/Canada) ‘Electro Sahara’ electronic blues
– Minyo Crusaders(Japan) Latin beats meet Japanese folk

Beyond the Main Stage
– Rhapsody: Folk Meets Ballet, a genre-blurring mix of ballet, traditional music, and theater programs
– Guided tours through historic Hengchun
– Performances from local folk veterans
– Hands-on workshops on traditional instruments from multiple countries
– A street fair with DIY activities and local food
Why This Matters for the Industry
For promoters, bookers, and touring artists across Southeast Asia, Hear Here is a rare two-day snapshot of how folk traditions from Amis electronic music to Tahitian dance to Sahara-inspired electro-blues are being remixed for contemporary audiences without losing their roots. It’s also a low-barrier entry point into Taiwan’s live music ecosystem, run by a regional government actively investing in cultural tourism.

Plan Your Trip
Hengchun’s walled old town sits minutes from Kenting National Park, Taiwan’s beach-and-surf capital, making the festival an easy anchor for a longer southern Taiwan itinerary — think coastal drives, night markets, and some of the island’s best diving, all reachable from Kaohsiung by car or bus. For international music professionals looking to combine festival scouting with a genuine cultural deep-dive, this corner of Taiwan delivers both.
Dates: October 9-10, 2026 (Fri.-Sat.)
Location: West Gate Square, Hengchun Historical City, Pingtung County, Taiwan
Admission: Free
