Street vendors at Eenhana, in the Ohangwena region, have until the end of this month to move to council-designated trading areas, as the town council moves to bring street trading under control.
Eenhana Town Council mayor Omri Kavandje says the relocation is aimed at creating a safer and more orderly trading environment.
He was speaking on Monday at an engagement with vendors, saying many vendors currently operate outside designated areas, with some setting up businesses in front of retail shops, which he said threatens established businesses.
“Some vendors have erected structures in spaces they consider suitable without approval from the town council. The relocation is being carried out in accordance with the council’s laws and is intended to provide vendors with safer spaces to conduct their businesses,” Kavandje said.
Council chief executive Wodibo Haulofu says the council has identified three areas where vendors can trade.
These are the newly constructed market next to the Eenhana State Hospital, the existing open market and the Ekolola informal settlement.
Haulofu says the council has started making arrangements to ensure vendors have suitable spaces at the designated areas before the relocation.
However, vendors want the council to prepare the sites properly before moving them.
Eenhana street vendors’ chairperson Joseph Valombola says they do not oppose the relocation, but want the council to first develop the designated areas and put measures in place to support their businesses.
“We are not against the relocation. We are only asking the council to make proper arrangements before moving us,” Valombola says.
