Elderly man loses home to fire

An elderly man lost his home and all of his possessions to fire this evening at Hopewell, Christ Church.

The incident happened a stone’s throw away from the Christ Church East constituency office and Nadia Adams, personal assistant to parliamentary representative and Attorney General Wilfred Abrahams was on the scene, along with Chetwyn Bourne and Kemar Harris.

Adams told The Nation the retired man lost all of his belongings, but was safe.

“We’re just trying to respect his privacy for the time being, but we will be exploring assistance to be able to help him because he lost literally everything.”

It is still not clear how the fire started.

“At this point in time, investigations are going on, but he would have left home temporarily to return to see the place being engulfed in flames, and for his safety’s sake, he tried to just stay away from the fire,” she said.

Two fire tenders were on the scene with The Nation team saw the cordoned road and flashing lights.

Tremelle Perch, divisional officer with the Barbados Fire Service, said they received the call around 6:40 p.m. and responded with two vehicles – one from Bridgetown Fire Station and the other from Worthing Fire Station.

The wooden home was not visible from the main road, located behind another house down a track. Perch said when they arrived it was fully alight, but “fire officers did an excellent job in maintaining it to that structure”.

Adams said they would assist with temporary housing and further help to get the man “through this difficult time”. (SAT)
