Farmers earn 2.7tri/- through Warehouse Receipt System

DODOMA: FARMERS across the country earned a total of 2.679tri/- after selling crops through the Warehouse Receipt System (WRS) during the 2025/26 financial year, it has been revealed.

Meanwhile, Local Government Authorities collected 61.05bn/- in crop cess, according to the latest Warehouse Receipts Regulatory Board (WRRB) report presented in Dodoma yesterday.

Presenting the report to journalists, WRRB Executive Director Asangye Bangu said a total of 1.12 billion kilogrammes of nine crops sold through the system in during the year, including cashew nuts, sesame, coffee, cocoa, pigeon peas, lentils, green grams, soybeans and tea.

He said the commodities were traded through the Warehouse Receipt System via digital auctions managed by the Tanzania Mercantile Exchange (TMX).

“These funds have contributed to improving household welfare by enabling citizens to meet essential needs such as education, healthcare, housing and investment in various productive and development activities,” he said.

Mr Bangu explained that the volume of crops sold under the digitalised system in 2025/26 increased by 43.6 per cent compared with 781.7 million kilogrammes sold during the 2024/25 financial year.

According to him, the volume of crops sold through the system increased by more than 340 million kilogrammes within a year.

“This increase demonstrates that more farmers continue to trust the system and are choosing to sell their produce through a formal and competitive marketing arrangement,” the director said.

He noted that the achievements have generated substantial benefits for farmers, the Government and the national economy.

Mr Bangu attributed the strong performance to the Government’s decision to inject 950m/- into the Board during the just-ended financial year, enabling it to strengthen its capacity to manage the Warehouse Receipt System more effectively and ensure that more citizens receive quality services.

He said the funds were used to provide education and awareness on the Warehouse Receipt System to farmers and other stakeholders across the country.

The money was also spent on upgrading ICT infrastructure and digital systems for managing WRS operations, strengthening the supervision and inspection of warehouses nationwide and purchasing equipment and tools to enhance the Board’s operational efficiency.

According to data presented by Mr Bangu, a total of 439.6 million kilogrammes of cashew nuts were collected and sold under the system during the 2025/26 financial year, the highest volume among the nine crops traded.

Other crops sold through the system included pigeon peas (269.9 million kg), sesame (199.6 million kg), lentils (131.4 million kg), green grams (37.0 million kg), coffee (29.2 million kg), cocoa (12.8 million kg), soybeans (2.1 million kg) and tea (381,440 kg).

He said the figures demonstrate that the Warehouse Receipt System has continued to expand across more crop value chains, increasing its contribution to both domestic trade and exports.

Outlining the future direction of the Warehouse Receipt System over the next five years, from 2026/27 to 2030/31, Mr Bangu said the Board has developed a number of strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening the system, improving service delivery efficiency and ensuring that greater benefits reach farmers, traders and other stakeholders.

Among the key strategies is the expansion of the Warehouse Receipt System into new production sectors.

“The WRRB will continue to broaden the scope of the Warehouse Receipt System to facilitate the trading of a wider range of commodities, not just agricultural crops,” he added.
