Farmers from Belize River Valley participate in Climate Smart Agriculture training

By Zoila Palma:  Today, 25 farmers from various communities within the Belize River Valley are participating in a Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) training at Swift Garden, Bermudian Landing.

The training focuses on climate-resilient production practices for corn and peanuts.

The training is being conducted by CARDI and sponsored by CRESAP as part of the Belize District Agriculture Department’s Training Plan.

The Ministry of Agriculture says that this aims to strengthen farmers’ technical capacity, promote crop diversification, and support the adoption of sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural practices.

The training covers improved planting techniques, soil and moisture management, pest and disease management, and other CSA practices aimed at improving productivity and reducing climate-related production risks.

As a diversification initiative, farmers are being encouraged to integrate corn and peanut production into their existing farming systems to improve food and income security and build greater farm resilience.

Farmers are also encouraged to liaise with their respective Extension Officers to learn more about upcoming training opportunities under the District Training Plan and participate in activities aligned with their production needs.
