Saint Lucia’s public healthcare system is under immense pressure.
That was the blunt assessment from Millennium Heights Medical Complex (MHMC) Chief Executive Officer Dr. Damian Greaves on Wednesday as he acknowledged the growing strain on the nation’s hospital network while unveiling a wide-ranging strategy aimed at strengthening healthcare services for the years ahead.
Speaking during a media briefing, Dr. Greaves admitted the challenges confronting the public health system but stressed that MHMC is responding with significant investments in its workforce, expanded international partnerships and long-term planning designed to improve patient care and build a more resilient healthcare system. “A hospital is only as strong as the people who work in it,” he said.
Central to that strategy is an aggressive investment in staff development, with employees set to receive enhanced training in clinical care, leadership, customer service, information technology and other essential areas to improve both patient outcomes and operational efficiency.
The healthcare complex is also strengthening partnerships with local, regional and international organisations, a move that has already delivered tangible benefits. Recent donations from partners in Canada included 55 wheelchairs, walkers and other medical equipment, with additional organisations continuing to provide critical supplies to support patient care. However, Dr. Greaves made it clear that modern equipment alone will not transform healthcare.
Instead, he said MHMC is equally focused on improving the patient experience by ensuring every visitor is treated with dignity, compassion and respect. To achieve that goal, every employee will undergo customer service and customer relations training as part of a wider effort to raise standards across the institution.
The CEO also revealed that MHMC is quietly strengthening its preparedness for future public health emergencies while advancing work on its Strategic Plan 2026–2031. The plan includes discussions on expanding hospital capacity, including the integration of the Government’s proposed fifth wing into future development plans.
While acknowledging that many of the healthcare system’s challenges cannot be solved overnight, Dr. Greaves pledged that the organisation would remain transparent about its shortcomings while continuing to pursue steady improvements.
He also delivered a passionate appeal to the public following reports of healthcare workers being verbally abused by frustrated patients and visitors.
Urging Saint Lucians to show greater patience and understanding, Dr. Greaves reminded the public that doctors, nurses and frontline staff are working under intense pressure while caring for hundreds of patients. “They are also human,” he said, appealing for greater respect as MHMC works to strengthen the country’s public healthcare system amid growing demand for healthcare services.
