Why Vipers need a point against APR to seal semi-final spot in Kagame Cup 2026

Vipers face off against APR in their final group A game in the Cecafa Kagame Cup at Amahoro stadium, Kigali on Thursday desperate to confirm their spot in the semi-final.

The Venoms lead the standings with six points, three more than both Kenya’s Gor Mahia and the Rwandan giants.

With Gor Mahia most likely to win against the group’s whipping boys, Garde Republicaine who have lost both their matches, then Vipers need at least point top standings in the group.

Kagame Cup 2026 Permutations

With only three groups, only the top team will qualify for the money bracket, the semi-final and will be joined by the best second placed side from all the groups.

In Group A, there is a possibility that all three teams; Vipers, Gor Mahia and APR finish on six points.

Goal difference is the second permutation and with Gor Mahia on four just like Vipers at the moment, any win for K’Ogalo and defeat for Denis Lavagne’s side will see the Kenyan side take over top spot.

Already, Rayon Sport and Al Hilal in Group C share same points; six and face off in the final game.

That means that if the settle for a draw, which is most likely, Al Hilal will finish on top on goal difference and Rayon Sport second both on seven points.

Rayon Sport will automatically take the second-best placed spot to join the top three in the semi-final and thus six points not enough for qualification as the second placed team.

Money bracket

Only the semi-finalists enter the money bracket with the tournament winner bagging $ 30,000, runners up $ 20,000 and third placed team $ 10,000.

Vipers are looking to emulate SC Villa (1987, 2003 & 2005), KCCA (1978 & 2019), Police (2006) and Express (2021) as Ugandan clubs that have previously won the Kagame Cup.
