After spending nearly two decades practicing law, Judge Sunny Mullins is making her case to voters in Georgia’s Rockdale County on her record while reminding them how local and state positions have a direct impact on their everyday lives.

Today, Mullins serves as an associate magistrate judge after being appointed to the position in 2024. In this role, she is often the first step to many civil disputes for county ordinances, landlord and tenant cases and also responsible for issuing warrants. Mullins is currently running for the Rockdale County State Court Associate position, hoping to join the 133 state court judges across Georgia.

She takes pride in asking the questions that are often overlooked when assessing each case. “These are somebody else’s children, parents or siblings, and I have taken it personally to be authentically myself, show compassion and listen – all without worrying about compromising the law, but just apply the law fairly and justly,” said Mullins.

Throughout her years on the bench, she has stood firm with the belief that every person who walks through a courthouse door deserves a judge who will hear them. A position on the state court would expand her role on the bench, hearing misdemeanors, traffic violations and other cases.

Rockdale County voters are participating in an historic election, determining whether Mullins would become the first African American woman on the court’s bench to represent them. Her message to women is to not let their careers define them. “You still define your career no matter the stage you are on — no matter if you are a mother, housewife or whether you’re coming back into your career – it’s your choice.”

While Mullins is originally from Minnesota and relocated to Georgia to attend Clark Atlanta University, the wife and mother of four has called Conyers, Georgia home for more than 15 years. Her >19 percent of registered voters have cast a ballot.
