The Rotary Club of Ibara GRA, Abeokuta, has challenged students of Ijemo Titun High School Junior to make responsible use of the internet and social media by turning them into tools for learning, skill development and personal growth.

The club gave the charge during its annual visit to the school under its Basic Education and Literacy project, where it also donated books, school bags, pens, biros and other educational materials to the students.

Ijemo Titun High School Junior is the club’s adopted “pet school”, with members of the club maintaining an annual relationship with the institution through educational support and other interventions.

Speaking during the programme, the President of the Rotary Club of Ibara GRA, Rotarian Johnson Soyoye, urged the students to be selective about the content they consume on social media platforms such as Facebook and TikTok.

Soyoye said the internet offered students opportunities to acquire knowledge beyond the classroom, urging them to take advantage of educational content rather than allowing social media to distract them from their studies.

“When you go on social media like Facebook and TikTok, please don’t follow the bad side. Always follow the educational part. There are so many things you can learn on the internet,” he said.

He explained that students could use online resources to strengthen their understanding of subjects such as Mathematics, Phonics and Science.

The Rotary president also encouraged the students to develop technology-related skills, particularly programming, noting that the growing influence of technology and artificial intelligence would create new opportunities for young people.

He urged the students to believe in themselves and begin developing skills that could position them to become future innovators and contributors to the digital economy.

Earlier, the immediate past President of the club, Rotarian Haruna Yusuf Kefas, said the Basic Education and Literacy project was usually carried out around September as part of the club’s commitment to supporting education.

Kefas explained that the annual visit was also aimed at sustaining the relationship between the club and the school while providing students with educational materials and encouragement.

He advised the students to remain committed to their studies, stressing that education remained an important foundation for achieving success.

He also urged them to respect and appreciate their teachers, describing teachers as important figures in their academic and personal development.

“Respect, obedience and commitment are what you owe your teachers. Don’t be shy to ask questions when they teach you and you do not understand. Don’t be afraid,” Kefas told the students.

He subsequently introduced Soyoye as the new president of the club and assured the students that Rotary Club of Ibara GRA would continue to identify with the school.

Kefas expressed hope that subsequent visits would enable the club to provide more educational materials and extend its support to a larger number of students.

The project chairperson, Rotarian Fatima Olagoro, was also part of the delegation, alongside Mr. Oluwaseun Osineye, Olalekan Egbetola of the City Boy Movement, Mrs. Mojisola Lamidi, the club’s CBN Director responsible for its finances, amongst others.

While responding, the Principal of Ijemo Titun High School Junior, Mrs. Odunlaya, commended the Rotary Club of Ibara GRA for its continued intervention and commitment to the school.

She expressed appreciation for the educational materials donated to the students and prayed for God’s blessings upon the president, members and the entire organisation.
