Mike Tomlin’s Minecraft City Is Thoroughly Impressive: Here’s What’s In It

Mike Tomlin spent nearly two decades building winning teams in Pittsburgh. Turns out, he was quietly building an entire city on Minecraft too.

For nearly two decades, Mike Tomlin’s life revolved around the Pittsburgh Steelers. He took over as head coach in 2007 and remained there for 19 seasons, becoming one of the most recognizable and consistent coaches of his generation. By the time he stepped down in January 2026, Tomlin had led Pittsburgh to 13 playoff appearances, eight AFC North titles and a Super Bowl XLIII championship — all while never posting a losing season.

Life looks a little different for Tomlin these days. After leaving the Steelers, the 54-year-old moved into television as an analyst for NBC Sports, giving football fans a chance to see more of his personality away from the weekly grind of coaching. But even that new gig didn’t prepare anybody for one of the more surprising revelations of his post-coaching life: Mike Tomlin is apparently a serious Minecraft architect.

And this isn’t Tomlin casually hopping online and throwing together a few houses. He revealed he’s been building the same Minecraft city for more than 12 years, starting the project when his children were younger as something they could do together. His kids eventually moved on from the game, but Tomlin didn’t. He continued expanding the city on his own, calling Minecraft a therapeutic way to disconnect from the pressure that came with coaching in the NFL.

Tomlin finally gave everybody a look inside the massive project on September 30 with the first installment of his YouTube series, “My 12 Year Minecraft City Build.” The nearly 20-minute episode, titled “Rooftops, Penthouses, and Urban Living,” immediately showed that Tomlin approached Minecraft with some of the same obsessive attention to detail that defined him as a coach. His city is built largely around a body of water and is packed with high-rise residential buildings, neighborhoods and carefully planned urban spaces rather than random structures thrown together.

The first downtown building Tomlin constructed was a full-blown boutique hotel, and even that sounds more like a real development proposal than a video game build. It features an executive spa, therapy rooms, a multipurpose conference space, indoor and outdoor boutiques, an elevator shaft, a front desk and even a basement speakeasy. Tomlin also explained that he is extremely conscious of lighting, views and functionality while building, right down to making sure his public buildings have an appropriate number of men’s and women’s restrooms.

That same attention carries throughout the rest of the city. One apartment building features aquariums running through multiple floors, while other luxury residences have penthouses, offices and rooftop recreational spaces. Tomlin even recreated an apartment complex inspired by The View, where one of his sons lived while attending the University of Maryland. Elsewhere there are suburban communities, green spaces, a CVS and high-rise apartments positioned to take advantage of views across the city.

And apparently, we still haven’t seen close to everything. Tomlin teased a baseball stadium, an MLS-style soccer stadium and a large “Bay Area” section that will be explored in later episodes, meaning his first video was essentially just the opening room of the tour. After 12 years and what reports estimate to be thousands of hours of work, Tomlin’s Minecraft city feels more like a legitimate passion project instead of a random retired coach hobby. Football fans spent 19 years watching him construct teams in Pittsburgh; now we’re finding out he was also building something completely different the entire time.
