Morning showers crash GST free Saturday, afternoon brings relief

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The tropical wave affecting Belize this morning is running exactly on schedule, delivering shower and thunderstorm outbreaks around the country through the morning hours before easing to isolated activity by afternoon, right in time for the first GST-free shopping day of the month to hit its stride.

According to the National Meteorological Service, a tropical wave is affecting the country. Skies will be cloudy today with sunny breaks, turning partly cloudy tonight. A few outbreaks of showers and thunderstorms will continue to develop around the country during the morning hours, becoming isolated by afternoon. Tonight, shower activity will be isolated, except for a medium chance of a few more over the southern districts.

The sea carries the day’s main caution. A Small Craft Caution is in effect, warning of occasionally gusty winds and locally rough seas near heavy showers and thunderstorms. Winds will blow from the east at 10 to 20 knots, with moderate to rough seas and waves of 4 to 7 feet. Operators of small crafts should exercise caution, and non-essential runs are better saved for Sunday.

Temperatures along the coast will reach a high of 88 degrees Fahrenheit (31 Celsius) and a low of 82 (28 Celsius). Inland areas will climb to 93 degrees Fahrenheit (34 Celsius) before dropping to 74 (23 Celsius). In the hills, expect a high of 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 Celsius) and a low of 68 (20 Celsius).

On the tropical front, the calm holds. Tropical cyclone formation is not expected over the region during the next 48 hours.

Looking ahead to Sunday and Sunday night, generally fair weather returns with isolated shower activity, giving the weekend a bright second half.

Today’s low tides are at 5:39 AM and 6:11 PM, with a high tide at 11:43 AM and another high at 12:03 AM tomorrow. The sun rose at 5:35 AM and will set at 6:18 PM. The forecast was issued by forecaster Catherine Cumberbatch.
