Oscar-Winning Director Spike Lee Host the BK Loves MJ Block Party in Brooklyn Honoring Pop Legend Michael Jackson.

“Happy Birthday!” roared thousands of miles of devoted music fans in Fort Greene Park for The BK Loves MJ Block Party in Brooklyn celebrating Pop Legend Michael Jackson birthday on Saturday, August 29^th,2026  which would have been his 68^th birthday. Jackson passed away in 2009 at the age of 50.

Oscar-Winning director and Brooklyn-native, Spike Lee, remembered his longtime friendship with the pop legend, holding a massive seven-hour block party on Jackson’s birthday to celebrate his legacy and contributions to the Black culture and pop music. The block party sponsored by the Jordan Brand, was nothing less of  spectacular show like some of his legendary past work.

The block party drew a  turnout of loyal fans who showed their devotion to the pop icon. The show had its guest disc jockey, DJ Spinna, who served all of Jackson’s hits from his childhood career in the Jackson 5 and his history-making solo career. Lee was on-stage and was the host throughout the show and had surprises in-store for fans throughout the day.

Lee took a moment to remembered how he met Michael Jackson  and his long-time creative partnership and friendship. Lee was chosen by Jackson to direct his two versions of his 1996’s political song, “They Don’t Really Care About Us”. The two videos director by Lee had the Brazilian version shot in Salvador and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The second prison version intercut archival footage of historic injustices, police brutality,  and civil rights protests with Jackson preforming inside a jail cell.

“ A quick and funny story!” said Lee, when he took a moment to speak to the audience. “ My phone rang one day and some on the phone answered, this is Michael Jackson, and I hung up. They called back a third time and said, “Spike don’t hang up the phone!” He came to my house in Washington Park and said here is the CD to my new album, HIStory. He wanted to me not to make a music video, but a short film. He ask me what song I wanted to do a short film on, and he chose me to do “They Don’t Care About Us” he said. As the crowd roared, Spike continued, “Today is Mike’s birthday and celebrate today as a day of peace and kindness.”

Lee had many surprised guests who also wanted to come out and celebrate the King of Pop’s birthday. The first surprise guest to come on stage was Civil Rights Activist Al Sharpton. He made an appearance while going viral dancing to Jackson’s “The Don’t’ Care About Us”. He came on stage just being in Washington and leading the “Defend the Vote” March on Friday. He took stage saying, “My man Michael Jackson celebrating his life! Happy Birthday MJ will forever love you and  we are out here in Fort Greene and remembered Michael  cared about us!” said Sharpton. He left quickly to do a taping for MS NOW Alex Witt Show.

The next surprise guest to take the stage was Stevie Wonder’s daughter, Aisha Morris, who made a special appearance and wished Jackson a Happy Birthday. She shared a special connection to the King of Pop because he served as background vocals on Wonder’s 1980 double platinum  hit “All I Do”. The crowed roared and  played Wonder’s 1981 version of “Happy Birthday” in honor of Jackson’s birthday. She took a moment to speak to the crowd, “There are not enough words to express how much Michael meant to us!” said Morris. ”We want to say Happy Birthday to Michael and express to the heavens how much we loved him!” she said.

The next surprised guest that made a brief appearance of WNBA 4x MVP New York Liberty center Jonquel “JJ” Jones. She took a moment to speak to the crowd, “ It’s great to see all your amazing faces and I hope you’re having a good time!” said Jones. “ I love all you!”

The next guest was Queens-based rapper Consequence.He  took the stage and performed his original songs that sampled Jackson’s “ Do You Remembered The Time?”

The next to take command of the stage was Michael Jackson impersonator, RipRockySteadyy, was the best. He  recreating Jackson’s iconic performances from “Bad”, and “Dirty Diana” getting on top of the speaker and giving the audience an electrifying  performance.

The final surprised guest, was not a person, but a piece of music history. Lee came out and did an honorable mention to Artist Prince, who died in 2016 at the age of 57. “Don’t believe the BS, Mike and Prince loved  each other very much!” he said.

Lee then brings out Prince’s iconic custom-made metallic-gold guitar that is shaped by his famous unpronounceable Auerswald symbol built by famed and renowned German guitar builder Jerry Auerswald in Berlin in 1995.

DJ Spinna played “Purple Rain”, and Lee sat on stage with the iconic guitar. After the song, he told the story on how he acquired the guitar, “I asked my brother for the guitar and he looked at me like I had three heads and four arms and, I guess that was a no. A year later this big box showed up at my house with the guitar” said Lee.

Heading into the last hour, Lee played the last song and told the crowd of Jackson’s loyal fans that today everyone should leave the park in peace in the memory of Michael. DJ Spinna played Jackson’s 1988 song “Man in the Mirror”. The tears flowed and the show came to a close, Lee ended the show with one last message, “Knicks did five!” he shouted. “ Get home safe and see you next year!”
