MAPLE Ridge RCMP are warning the public about a recent increase in reported counterfeit cash circulating in Maple Ridge.

In the last month, Maple Ridge RCMP has received at least eight separate reports of counterfeit $50 or $100 Canadian bank notes being used at various businesses in our community.

Thankfully, most of the businesses that have been targeted have spotted the fraudulent money and reported it to police. In some cases, however, they have been left on the hook for a loss of income.

It is a criminal offense to knowingly possess or use counterfeit money, and unfortunately, you cannot be reimbursed if you unknowingly accept it as legal tender.

“We want the public to be aware of this recent fraud trend so that they can take the necessary steps to protect themselves,” says Maple Ridge RCMP frontline Sgt. Daniel Rettenbacher. “Local business owners are reminded to ensure staff are familiar with how to identify counterfeit currency and verify security features, as well as have proper protocols in place for handling cash. Customers are also advised to do their due diligence when accepting or depositing currency.”
