Police and YDEP Launch Groundbreaking Programme to Prepare Saint Lucian Youth for Jobs and Leadership

A new partnership between the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) and the Youth Development and Empowerment Programme (YDEP) is giving young Saint Lucians a direct pathway to employment, life skills and leadership through an innovative six-week training initiative that blends classroom learning with real-world work experience.

The programme, launched on Monday at the Castries Comprehensive Secondary School, marks the first collaboration of its kind between the RSLPF’s Community Policing Unit and YDEP. Organisers say the initiative is designed to help young people transition confidently into the workforce while strengthening the relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

Participants will spend four weeks receiving intensive training in customer service, communication, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, telephone etiquette, workplace professionalism and legal awareness before moving into a two-week internship where they will apply the skills in real workplace settings.

Inspector Brigitte Algodel, Officer in Charge of the Community Policing Unit, said the programme was intentionally designed to prepare participants for both employment and everyday life.

“This programme has been carefully structured to provide a balanced learning experience. These sessions are designed to equip you with practical skills that will serve you well in your everyday life.”

She added that the internship component will provide valuable exposure to professional work environments.

“At the Community Policing Unit, we firmly believe that prevention begins with engagement. By investing in our youth today, we are helping to build safer communities tomorrow.”

Assistant Commissioner of Police Albert Charlery described the initiative as a landmark partnership that reflects both organisations’ shared commitment to youth development.

“Today is very different because it is the first time that the leadership of the Youth Development and Empowerment Programme and the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force are collaborating,” Charlery said.

He encouraged participants to fully embrace the opportunity, noting that the programme is intended to strengthen their employability while empowering them to become productive citizens.

YDEP Chief Executive Officer Anya Charles told participants the programme will be highly interactive, encouraging discussion, critical thinking and practical application of every lesson.

“After the four weeks of training, we will move into two weeks of internship where everything you have learned will be put into practice,” Charles explained.

She also urged participants to approach the programme with open minds, reminding them that different perspectives can all contribute to personal growth.

The programme’s message of opportunity was reinforced by WPC 696 Faucher, who encouraged participants to view the initiative as the beginning of a life-changing journey.

“Today is more than just the first day of a programme. It is the beginning of a journey filled with new opportunities, new friendships and new possibilities,” she said.

Faucher told participants they had been selected because of their potential and challenged them to step outside their comfort zones, assuring them they would be supported throughout the programme by police officers, mentors and facilitators.

Organisers from both the RSLPF and YDEP hope the initiative will produce confident, job-ready young people equipped with practical workplace experience, stronger life skills and the leadership qualities needed to make meaningful contributions to their communities.
