A man has been arrested in the Kavango West region after police intercepted a bakkie transporting slaughtered cattle, which are suspected to have been stolen.
The vehicle, carrying four men, was stopped by the police during Operation Basadi in the Bunya area on Thursday.
One of the men was arrested in connection with the suspected stock theft. Police investigations are continuing to establish what happened and to identify the other occupants of the vehicle.
In a separate incident in the Otjozondjupa region, two men allegedly took a sheep from a grazing field at Omupanda village in the Okakarara district and slaughtered it without the owner’s consent on Thursday. The sheep was valued at N$600.
The two suspects are expected to appear in the Okakarara Magistrate’s Court on Friday morning.
Operation Basadi is aimed at combating stock theft and protecting farmers and communities.
The arrest comes as Namibia battles a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak, which has led to restrictions on the slaughter and movement of cloven-hoofed animals.
