Prime Minister: “What Guatemala has done is unacceptable”

By Zoila Palma: Prime Minister John Briceño today announced that Belize Ambassador to Guatemala Jose Alpuche will be called home for consultations following the recent incident involving a Guatemalan military aircraft in Belizean airspace.

Briceño said he would meet with the Foreign Minister and the National Security Council this week.

“I will be meeting with the Foreign Minister and National Security council and then, one I would recommend that we call in the Ambassador from Guatemala in Belize for an explanation as to what is going on and to recall our Ambassador,” Briceño said.

“What has been done is unacceptable and as I said in my speech at the UN, that it seems that the Guatemalan military is trying to play some kind of games as we go into the ICJ. Try to destabilize this process and we will not allow that to happen. We will be talking to the friends of Belize, Americans, British, Canadians and OAS for them to understand that what Guatemala has done is unacceptable,” the Prime Minister added.

Briceño also emphasized the importance of diplomatic conduct between neighboring states. “This is not how democratically elected countries behave or how good neighbors behave,” he said.
