Starting construction on new Pitt Meadows Secondary school

CONSTRUCTION is beginning on the new Pitt Meadows Secondary school, which will provide students with a safer and more modern environment to learn.

“Pitt Meadows is a vibrant community with a bright future and I’m proud that the local high school will soon better reflect the community it serves,” said Lisa Beare, Minister of Education and Child Care. “The new Pitt Meadows Secondary will give students a modern, welcoming place to learn, build friendships and create memories, while providing the wider community with spaces to come together for generations to come.”

The replacement of Pitt Meadows Secondary school will offer educational programming for students in grades 8-12 in southern Pitt Meadows.

Located on the same property as the current school, the new school is being built to LEED Gold standards and will include:

• 1,100 safer, more modern seats to support students in the area
• a neighbourhood learning centre with a purpose-built space for Indigenous education, theatre space and a teaching kitchen for community use
• improved site efficiency, safer pedestrian routes and organized dropoff and pickup zones thanks to the new school’s three-storey design
• a sustainable and energy-efficient learning environment
• a new parking lot and expanded turf field, which will be constructed once the new school is open

The Province is providing as much as $143 million for the project, with an additional $142,000 contribution from the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District and an $800,000 commitment from the City of Pitt Meadows to support the new turf field. The new school is expected to open for students by fall 2029.

“This milestone reflects years of persistence, advocacy and collaboration across the Pitt Meadows community,” said Elaine Yamamoto, chair, Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Board of Education. “We are grateful for the partnership of Katzie First Nation, the significant investment and support provided by the Province through the Ministry of Education and Child Care and the Ministry of Infrastructure, and the contributions of the City of Pitt Meadows and the many students, families, staff and community members who have helped move this important project forward.”

Since 2017, the Province has approved more than $263 million to create 1,190 new seats and 3,720 seismically safer seats for students in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District. That includes:

• 1,100-seat replacement of Pitt Meadows Secondary school, under construction
• 120-seat addition at Blue Mountain Elementary, which is under construction and expected to open in early 2027
• a seismic upgrade at Harry Hooge Elementary, which is currently in the design phase and expected to begin construction in summer 2027
• new Eric Langton Elementary, a seismic replacement and expansion, which opened in September 2026
• 195-seat addition at Golden Ears Elementary, which opened in September 2026
• seismic upgrades at Fairview and Westview Elementary schools, which were complete in 2018
• a new 660-seat c̓əsqənelə Elementary, which opened in 2019
• site acquisition in East Albion for a future school

Additionally, for the 2025-26 school year, the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District has received $5.6 million through minor capital programs, which include funding for building maintenance, energy-efficiency upgrades, food infrastructure and accessible playground equipment.
