Diesel is still used in most of Africa's productive sector, from trucks transporting commodities across borders to farms powering machinery and companies operating generators.

  • Diesel prices increased: Libya, Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Gabon, Niger, Ethiopia and Madagascar all recorded higher diesel prices compared with last month.
  • Two countries were unchanged: Angola and Sudan maintained the same diesel prices as recorded last month.
  • Average price climbed: The average diesel price across the countries rose from $1.52 per litre last month to $1.56 per litre currently.
  • The latest figures point to a broad increase in diesel prices, with 8 of the 10 countries recording increases, while only Angola and Sudan remained unchanged.

This means that reduced diesel costs are more than just a benefit to motorists.

They can cut operational costs, promote lower food prices, boost industrial competitiveness, and provide more freedom for enterprises to develop and expand.

The significance of this is becoming more apparent as global fuel markets tighten.

Diesel fuel prices across various African regions and internationally have escalated following the conflict in Iran, exacerbated by potential closures of the Strait of Hormuz and disruptions to refining operations in Russia and Saudi Arabia.

Reuters reported that US diesel futures jumped 7.4% on August 10, while European diesel refining margins rose nearly 10%.

For African countries that can maintain relatively cheap and reliable diesel supplies, that creates an important economic advantage.

Fortunately, a report in July showed that the Dangote Refinery in Nigeria is now supplying more neighbouring markets, strengthening Nigeria’s position in regional petroleum trade.

Industry analysts say the latest assessment highlights the strategic importance of domestic refining for Africa’s biggest oil producer.

Low diesel costs have a significant impact on transportation.

Trucks, buses, delivery vehicles, and heavy-duty equipment need a lot of fuel. When fuel gets cheaper, operators' operating expenses fall, potentially lowering the cost of transporting food, raw materials, and manufactured goods.

With that said, here are the African countries with the most expensive diesel in July 2026, per data seen on GlobalPetrolPrices.

Compared to last month’s list, when the average cost of diesel was 1.52 U.S. dollars per liter, as opposed to 1.56 U.S. dollars per liter currently, diesel prices for Libya, Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Gabon, Niger, Ethiopia, and Madagascar all increased.

While prices for Angola and Sudan remained the same.
