TWO women died after a fire broke out in a locked room at a homestead in Gombakomba Village, Manicaland Province.
The tragedy occurred on August 8, 2026.
In a statement, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the victims, aged 18 and 29, were reportedly mentally challenged and had been locked inside the room at the time of the fire.
“The bodies of the two victims were conveyed to Victoria Chitepo Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations,” Commissioner Nyathi said.
Police said they have launched comprehensive investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the fire started and why the women were locked in.
Meanwhile, the ZRP has appealed to the public to be more vigilant in caring for vulnerable members of society.
“The ZRP urges members of the public to exercise caution and ensure the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable persons, particularly those requiring special care and supervision,” Nyathi said.
The tragedy has left the Gombakomba community in shock. Investigations are ongoing.
