Uganda ready for more Badminton action as Kampala Future Series returns

Uganda is gearing up for more international badminton action as the Kampala International 2026 Future Series takes centre stage at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium from September 24–27.

The tournament comes on the back of Uganda’s successful hosting of the AirBadminton Africa Championships, where the hosts collected one gold and two bronze medals as a team, giving the country another opportunity to showcase its growing badminton ambitions on the international stage.

Now, attention shifts to the indoor courts, where Uganda will host another BWF-sanctioned event that is expected to attract players from across Africa and beyond.

The Kampala International Future Series regularly brings together a diverse international field, with competitors from Africa, Europe, Asia and the Middle East joining the host nation. This year’s participating countries include India, South Africa, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Algeria, Iran, Malaysia, Luxembourg, Myanmar and the United States, among others.

Sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the tournament will feature five events: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles, with USD 5,000 in prize money on offer.

While the prize money provides an incentive, ranking points will be an equally important attraction for the players. The points earned in Kampala will contribute to their BWF rankings as they continue to build their international careers and accumulate points towards upcoming competitions, including the longer-term qualification journey to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

For Uganda, the tournament presents an opportunity to combine international competition with player development.

The hosts are expected to field more than 20 players, including a number of upcoming talents who will get the chance to compete against international opposition and gain valuable experience on a BWF-sanctioned stage.

For the emerging Ugandan players, playing at home also offers a chance to experience the intensity of international competition without the challenges of travelling abroad, while testing their skills against opponents from different badminton backgrounds.

The tournament also underlines Uganda’s growing role as a host for international badminton events. Coming shortly after the AirBadminton Africa Championships, the Future Series keeps the sport in the spotlight and gives local players another opportunity to learn, compete and earn ranking points on home soil.

As the action begins at Lugogo, the focus will be on the titles, ranking points and prize money, but equally on the exposure being created for Uganda’s next generation.
