President Adama Barrow has called on political parties and their supporters to conduct peaceful, issue-based campaigns ahead of the December 5 presidential election, warning against violence, political provocation and ethnic divisions.
Speaking at a general meeting in Jabang as part of his ongoing Meet the People Tour, President Barrow urged political actors to demonstrate restraint and promote national unity during the election period.
According to a statement published by the State House of The Gambia on its official Facebook page, the President “called for peaceful and issue-based campaigns, urging all political actors to avoid violence and provocation.” The statement added that he “preached against ethnic divisiveness.”
The State House also reported that speakers at the gathering praised the government’s development initiatives, particularly in agriculture, women’s economic empowerment, healthcare and infrastructure.
Among the achievements highlighted was the government’s fertiliser subsidy programme, which, according to the Presidency, has reduced the price of fertiliser from D2,500 to D1,100.
The State House further disclosed that 80,000 women have benefited from the Women Enterprise Fund, while 2,064 adolescent girls have established their own businesses through the Sahel Women’s Empowerment and Demographic Dividend (SWEDD) Project.
The Presidency also outlined several development projects undertaken in the Old Yundum Constituency.
According to the statement, a solar-powered cooling facility installed at Sukuta is supporting a women’s vegetable garden, with an estimated 405 people benefiting from the initiative.
In the healthcare sector, the State House cited the first phase of the Farato Teaching Hospital, which comprises an Emergency Treatment Centre, Biomedical Engineering Unit, National Blood Bank, National Public Health Reference Laboratory and Training Centre.
Other healthcare developments highlighted included the inauguration of the Food and Drug Quality Control Laboratory in Brusubi and the commencement of services at the Busumbala Health Post.
On road infrastructure, the Presidency reported that the Farato Bojang Kunda–Bafuloto Road was completed in 2026, while construction of the Old Yundum–Sukuta–Jambanjelly Highway is nearing completion.
The statement further indicated that survey and design work for land development and access roads at Lamin Wayoto had been completed.
The developments were presented by speakers at the Jabang gathering as evidence of the government’s efforts to improve public services, support economic activities and expand infrastructure within the constituency.
President Barrow’s appeal for peaceful political engagement comes as The Gambia prepares for the December 5 presidential election, in which he is seeking another term in office.
