New doctors move closer to full registration after SLBMC internship

A group of newly qualified doctors has moved a step closer to independent practice in Antigua and Barbuda after completing a year-long clinical internship at Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC).
The hospital marked the completion of its 2025-2026 Medical Internship Programme with a graduation ceremony on Monday, recognising members of the 2026 medical intern class and several faculty members.
The programme is designed to give new doctors a strong foundation in clinical medicine and prepare them for full registration and independent general practice. Successful completion is required for full registration as a medical practitioner in Antigua and Barbuda.
During the year, the interns completed core rotations in internal medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, and paediatrics. The hospital said the practical training helped them build the clinical knowledge, skills and confidence needed to advance in their careers.
Dr Georgian Ajilloh was named Intern of the Year for her overall competence, compassion and professionalism. She also received the Patient Care and Compassion Award and the Leadership and Team Spirit Award.
Dr David Odulaja received the Clinical Excellence Award for his knowledge, skill and judgement, as well as the Spirit of Service Award for his dedication to patients, colleagues and the wider community.
The Most Improved Intern award went to Dr Brianna Benjamin in recognition of her growth in clinical skills, confidence and professional maturity.
Faculty members and departments were also recognised for their contribution to the programme. Dr Vonetta George, chair of SLBMC’s Department of Surgery, received the Mentorship Award for the second consecutive year, while the Department of Paediatrics retained the Outstanding Department Support Award.
Dr Gaden Osborne, an SLBMC neurologist and chair of subspecialties, received the Best Teaching Consultant Award for his contribution to medical education.
