By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The United Democratic Party is calling on the Public Utilities Commission and the Government of Belize to immediately roll back the latest increase in electricity rates.
In a release issued Friday, the party said the cost of living is already crippling Belizean families, with food, rent and transportation consuming more of household incomes.
The UDP noted that this is the second electricity rate increase in seven months, following one in January, and that it comes before the year is even halfway over.
The party focused particular criticism on the amount already spent on the sector.
“After investing close to $400 million of the people’s money in electricity infrastructure acquisitions, Belizeans are now facing an additional 1.5 cents per kilowatt hour in electricity costs,” the statement reads. “Where is the benefit to the consumer?”
The release points to complaints across the country about spikes in bills, with many customers questioning increases despite little or no change in consumption.
The party is demanding that government roll back the increase, explain how the $400 million investment has benefited consumers, address the complaints about higher bills, and put consumers ahead of further financial burdens.
