Weekend Recap: Here’s What Happened Over The Weekend 

This past weekend in the media was filled with news films, reality tv, politics and even social media commentary. From social backlash to preparation for the 2027 elections, there was news to keep everyone on their feet.

Abi, Araga Evicted From The Big Brother Naija House 

Big Brother Naija Season 11 is now down to 14 contestants as Abi and Araga were evicted from the Big Brother Naija during the live show, on Sunday, 13th of September. As the 11th season of the show draws closer to an end, the evictions have started coming faster and the reality stars were sent packing from the house on Sunday night during the live eviction show after pulling the lowest votes for the week.

The nominations for their eviction took place on Monday evening shortly after Tram was crowned head of house (HoH) for week seven and secured immunity from this week’s evictions.

After the HoH games, Big Brother asked the contestants to gather inside the lounge to begin the nomination process and unlike the prior nominating processes, where they had been asked to state the names of housemates who they wanted to nominate, they were instead required to search the house for red envelopes that had been hidden around the house.

Their eviction makes 10 housemates who have left the Big Brother Naija season 11 house since it began on July 26th.

Tom Holland Surpasses Zoe Saldaña, Becomes Highest Grossing Actor Of All Time 

Tom Holland has surpassed Avatar star Zoe Saldaña and is now the highest grossing actor of all time worldwide, as “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” continues tracking to become the highest grossing movie of all time in the U.S.

Despite losing its spot and being displaced from the number-one spot on the domestic box-office chart, “Spider-Man brand new day” has broken yet another record, and has crossed $935 million in its domestic run, and has grossed $2. 45 billion worldwide in its seventh week in cinemas.

Although the total earnings are still behind that of “Avatar” and “Avengers: Endgame,” the cinema run is one for the books.

Singer And Actor, Lady Gaga Welcomes First Child With Fiancé 

Popular American singer Lady Gaga has welcomed her first child with her fiancé, Michael Polansky. The news was confirmed when the duo were spotted strolling around with a baby in tow. 

The singer who got engaged to her long time partner in 2024 after dating since 2019, has been out of the limelight since the end of her tour in April this year, and while there are speculations involving the use of a surrogate in the creation of the child, the singer and actor is yet to confirm any of the speculations on her child.

Tinubu, Peter Obi And Atiku, Amongst Others Make The Final Presidential List For The 2027 Elections 

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially published the presidential list for the 2027 elections and 18 candidates made it. 

Out of the 18 candidates published by INEC, 16 are men and 2 are women, with the contenders including Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abubakar Atiku of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Peter Obi of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) who are the popular candidates who have contested for the position before. 

Amongst the others are Chibuzor Okereke of Labour Party (LP), Oluseyi Makinde of Allied People’s Movement (APM), and Omoyele Sowore of African Action Congress (AAC). The only two female presidential candidates on the published list are Okwori Fredrick of the National Democratic Party (NDP) and Esther Okereke of the National Redemption Party (NRM).

U.S Based Nigerian Professor Uju Anya, Under Attack Over Comments On Late Charlie Kirk 

A Nigerian-American professor, Uju Anya is now the victim of racial attacks after a social media back and forth where she mocked the death of late conservative activist, Charlie Kirk by tweeting “May he rest in piss” and described him as a “Shotbag.” 

Over the weekend, the university she works at put out a statement regarding her posts on social media, promising to investigate after the owner of X (formerly Twitter) Elon Musk responded to her racially inclined tweets, with others criticizing her comments and asking for Carnegie Mellon (the school she teaches at) to intervene. Although the school put out a statement, Uju Anya took to social media to express that she stood by her beliefs and has been the victim of racial and bigoted attacks for years on end. 

It is unclear if the university will let her go over the allegations made.
