Aba Ariginal is back with ‘Anthem’
Aba Ariginal, born Patrick Anthony Tenyue, has been part of the UK reggae scene since his early days with Matumbi and Aswad. He later spent a decade with UB40, forming the band’s celebrated horn section together with his brother Henry in 1984 and remaining until 1994. His work has gone well beyond the stage, too. As a horn arranger, keyboard player and bassist, he’s made his mark in the studio as well.
Released by Megawave, Anthem follows the classic showcase format, pairing reggae compositions with dub versions. Vocals are kept to a minimum. The album opens with a UK steppers interpretation of John Holt & The Paragons’ Hooligan (Change Your Style), while Isabel – Stone Head Remix brings in the unmistakable presence of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry.
The rest of the album is all about the horns and the dub treatment. Instrumental reggae cuts are followed by their dub versions, giving Anthem the feel of a classic Showcase album, where the musicianship and the studio work are equally important.
