Climate Change Department launches CARICOM Youth Negotiators workshop

By Zoila Palma:  The Climate Change Department, through its Climate Youth Academy, has launched a three-day CARICOM Youth Negotiators Workshop aimed at strengthening the capacity of young people to participate in regional and international climate negotiations. The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Youth Negotiators Academy, with support from UNICEF Belize, LACLIMA and regional UNFCCC experts recommended by the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre.

The regional capacity-building training brings together young negotiators ahead of COP31 and CARICOM’s Pre-COP discussions.

Participants are being introduced to the technical aspects of climate diplomacy while building regional networks and learning from experienced negotiators.

On the first day, Chief Climate Change Officer Edalmi Pinelo welcomed participants and shared guidance with the young leaders, including university students from the University of Belize and Galen University.

Over the course of the workshop, participants will develop practical skills including understanding legal terminology, preparing opening statements, engaging with mentors and building strategic alliances across the Caribbean. The training is also intended to promote intergenerational knowledge transfer and strengthen the ability of young Caribbean leaders to advocate for the interests of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

The Climate Change Department said the initiative is focused on equipping the next generation of negotiators to contribute meaningfully to international climate discussions.
