Comment on Happy Fringing: How to Navigate Festival Season as a disabled person by Marysia
Having broken even with my own one-person show (a solo play of the novella The Yellow Wallpaper), I imagine that the enormous issue that I had in 1987 (under the name Mary Kurowski) is just as likely to occur today as back then: a host venue or venue main renter taking you for a ride. Mine attempted to get away with not providing something in my contract with them, and did get away with not giving me a safe display area in the lobby (so my brilliant poster designed and created by me and laminated got stolen before the first performance because they put it outside the venue), not giving me the lighting that I required (I kid you not, we had to use the basic room lights), not allowing me past the first room which was my performance space, so I couldn’t get to speak to the person I signed with and who was in charge, misogyny in spades, and countless other things on the same lines. And this is not unusual. So my recommendation is: be prepared for anything.
