With a recording career stretching back to the 1960s, Freddie McGregor stands among the most revered voices in Jamaican music history, equally admired for his roots reggae recordings and his enduring lovers rock classics. On this welcome double A-sided 12-inch from Berlin’s Deeper Roots label, the veteran singer is joined by producer Niney The Observer and the formidable Soul Syndicate Band, a studio outfit whose musicianship helped define the sound of roots reggae’s golden age.

The first side features Rasta Have Faith, Freddie’s stirring cut on the immortal Satta Massa Gana riddim first made famous by The Abyssinians. Originally surfacing in the late seventies, the tune still carries tremendous weight. Niney’s production keeps the familiar horn lines to the forefront while rich organ work adds depth and atmosphere. McGregor’s heartfelt vocal sits perfectly in the mix, delivering a message of faith and perseverance over a tough, driving backing. The extended format allows the riddim room to breathe before giving way to the excellent dub companion, Organ Satta, a deep instrumental excursion built around haunting organ melodies in a heavy and atmospheric workout.

On the reverse, Chant It Down finds Freddie in typically inspired form, urging the faithful to chant down Babylon with conviction and purpose. His smooth yet commanding delivery is matched by Soul Syndicate’s rock-solid accompaniment, demonstrating why the band became the backing force behind so many classic Jamaican sessions. The extended mix gradually slips into Chant It Dub, a subtle and atmospheric dub treatment where drifting vocal fragments, echoing instrumentation and restrained effects combine to captivating effect.

Bringing together Freddie McGregor’s timeless vocal talents, Niney The Observer’s expert production touch and the unmistakable musical foundation of Soul Syndicate, this release captures the essence of classic roots reggae. A serious selection for collectors and a fine reminder of Jamaica’s rich musical heritage.
