San Joaquin Fiesta celebrates 60 years of Faith, Tradition and Community

By Zoila Palma:  The San Joaquin community celebrated a major cultural milestone on August 14 with the 60th anniversary of the San Joaquin Fiesta, marking six decades since the village held its first fiesta in 1967.

The celebration brought together residents, community leaders and cultural stakeholders to honour a tradition rooted in faith, heritage and community spirit.

The National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) was among those supporting the anniversary celebrations and received a special recognition award for its continued partnership with the San Joaquin community in preserving and promoting the longstanding tradition.

The award was accepted on behalf of NICH by Rolando Cocom, Director of the Institute for Social and Cultural Research, and Giovani Pinelo, Public History Officer.

Director Kim Vasquez of the Institute of Creative Arts and members of her team were also present for the celebration.

NICH recognized the leadership of Francisco Magaña of the San Joaquin Fiesta Organizing Committee for his dedication to organizing the annual event and helping preserve the community’s cultural traditions.

NICH also expressed appreciation to its President Albert Vaughan and Minister of Culture Francis Fonseca for their continued support of Belize’s living heritage.
