Back To The City Unveils Documentary Series Spotlighting SA’s Next Hip-Hop Wave. In the lead-up to its landmark 20th edition, Africa’s premier hip-hop festival is expanding its cultural footprint beyond the stage. Back To The City Festival has launched Against All Odds, a documentary-style music series that profiles the next generation of South African hip-hop artists who refuse to be counted out.
Rooted in the festival’s 2026 theme of the same name, the series digs into a central question: what does it mean for a young artist to keep creating, performing, and building a career despite the obstacles stacked against them? It arrives as Back To The City prepares to mark three milestones on 10 October 2026 at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown: 20 years of the festival itself, 50 years since the 1976 June 16 Youth Uprising, and 140 years of the City of Johannesburg. The festival’s messaging has consistently framed the moment as one of resilience: “Against oppression. Against silence. Against being counted out. Against all odds.”
The latest episode centres on LaCabran, the Durban-born rapper and founding member of the Qwellers collective. LaCabra has emerged as one of the sharper, more independent voices in the current South African scene, blending hard-edged storytelling with African trap and Zulu influences. His recent solo album MR BULLY and earlier work, including the collaborative uNoXhaka II and the debut project iQhawe Emphakathini, have positioned him as an artist carving his path on his own terms, complete with sold-out merch drops, independent tours, and high-profile collaborations with the likes of A-Reece and Nasty C.
