Online hate against South Asians jumped 240% since 2024: Study
The slur ‘pajeet’ and its variants appeared in 30% of all posts on social media platform X and 45% of mentions on fringe websites.

Online hate in the United States against South Asians surged 240% between January 2024 and June 2026, according to a study by Washington-based think tank Center for the Study of Organized Hate.
More than half a million posts with racist, dehumanising and xenophobic slurs and narratives targeting South Asians appeared on social media platform X between January 2025 and June 2026, found the study published on Monday.
The monthly volume had risen by 75% during this period and 240% between January 2024 and June 2026, it added.
Such posts had “dramatically increased” across mainstream and fringe social media platforms, the study found.
The study examines the scale, nature and tactics of online hate targeting South Asian Americans, including those of Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and other South Asian backgrounds across social media platforms such as X, 4chan, 8chan and Gab.
The think tank identified nearly four lakh hateful and dehumanising posts targeting South Asians across platforms such as 4chan, 8chan and Gab in 2025.
Five of the six highest-volume months were between November 2025 and June 2026, it said.
This indicates that anti-South Asian hate was “intensifying rather than receding”, said the Center for the Study of Organized Hate.
